Anna Orlikowska is a Polish multimedia artist based in Berlin. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, her work explores emotional and perceptual landscapes where reality blurs with fiction, and memory intertwines with imagination. Within these shifting zones, she invokes the phrase hic sunt dracones—Latin for “here be dragons”—once used on old maps to mark unknown, feared, or unexplored territories. Orlikowska uses this metaphor to investigate contemporary forms of blankness or absence.Latest Projects Removing Darkness Memory of Last Vacation Bat Wool Film about Dust Land of Darkness L:H=N Night Butterflies Memory of the garden More on Vimeo MORE ABOUTIn her photography, these “blank spots” may appear as white patches or overexposed areas—spaces devoid of information. In history, they manifest as silences, forgotten or erased events. In the present, they represent what remains unseen, ignored, or deliberately obscured. These zones, where meaning is hidden or suppressed, captivate her most, inviting imagination and memory to fill the void.Rather than providing clear conclusions, her works build layered narratives—real, imagined, or fictional—that move fluidly between documentation and staging, encouraging reflection on the acts of seeing, remembering, and assigning meaning.
